ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to compare the physical characteristics of circulation, salinity structure and transport in the Itajaí-Açu and Itajaí-Mirim estuaries. Due to its importance, the Itajaí-Açu estuary has been studied in the last decade. However, its main tributary, the Itajaí-Mirim has never been assessed, especially as an opportunity to comparatively investigate the flow behavior of salt wedge estuaries with different widths and depths. Field data were acquired during two campaigns that covered the complete semi-diurnal tidal regimes during spring and neap tides. Water level, total transport volume, current and salinity were recorded hourly and synoptically at cross-sections in each estuary. The campaigns were conducted during a prolonged period of low river discharge. The tidal range during the spring and neap tide campaigns were of approximately 1.2 and 0.4 m, respectively. At the Itajaí-Açu and Itajaí-Mirim cross-sections, the peak ebb and flood currents were -0.8 and -0.6 m s-1 and 0.8 and 0.4 m s-1, respectively, during the spring tide campaign, and classified as well mixed and highly stratified estuaries, respectively. During the neap tide campaign, both estuaries were classified as salt wedge. The dominant mechanism was the salt transport by advection due to fluvial advection in both estuaries and campaigns. The landwards salt transport, which resulted from dispersive processes, was only important during neap tide for the Itajaí-Açu estuary.

Resumo A instalação do Complexo Industrial Portuário de Suape (CIPS) modificou algumas características físicas, químicas e biológicas do Estuário de Suape. Este estudo apresenta a primeira caracterização física deste sistema, focando na hidrodinâmica local, transporte de materiais e a influência destes sobre algumas propriedades locais. Os parâmetros físicos também foram associados aos hidrocarbonetos de petróleo dissolvidos e/ou dispersos (HPDDs). Durante um ciclo completo de maré (13 h), foram registrados o nível, fluxo e propriedades da água (salinidade, temperatura, material em suspensão - MS -, clorofila e oxigênio dissolvido), além da velocidade e direção das correntes, usando ADCP e CTD. Os HPDDs foram investigados nas águas superficiais e de fundo, através de espectrofluorescência. Os resultados revelaram uma estrutura vertical homogênea, um regime de maré semidiurno e um padrão térmico diurno. As concentrações de HPDDs na superfície e no fundo são baixas e similares, devido à ação da maré. A fonte mais provável é o CIPS, uma vez que o transporte residual dos hidrocarbonetos de petróleo, da clorofila e do oxigênio dissolvido são no sentido do estuário do Massangana. Um padrão oposto foi observado para o transporte residual da salinidade e MS, no sentido da lagoa. Estes resultados indicam que a hidrodinâmica local é essencial para entender o transporte e troca de materiais entre os vários segmentos do estuário. Estudos mais completos são necessários para se obter conclusões mais consistentes.

Abstract The Suape Estuary encompasses the Suape Industrial Port Complex (SIPC), a major industrial development in Brazil's Northeast region, which, in order to be implanted, caused drastic environmental changes in this system. This study presents the first physical characterization of the Suape estuarine system, focusing on the local hydrodynamics, material transport and its influence on some specific properties. Physical properties were also associated to dissolved dispersed petroleum hydrocarbons (DDPHs). A study was undertaken during a complete semi-diurnal tidal cycle (13 hr), during which water level, water flow, current velocity and direction, water properties (salinity, temperature, suspended particulate matter - SPM -, chlorophyll and dissolved oxygen) were recorded using ADCP and CTD systems. The DDPHs were investigated in surface and bottom waters, by spectrofluorescence, using Carmópolis oil and chrysene as analytical standards. Results showed a well-mixed vertical structure, a semi-diurnal tide regime and a diurnal thermal pattern. There was no statistical difference between DDPH concentrations at surface and bottom, due to the tide acting as an important homogenizer. DDPHs were low and the main contribution seems to be that from SIPC, as the residual transport of DDPHs, chlorophyll and dissolved oxygen, was towards the Massangana estuary. An opposite pattern was observed for salinity and SPM, whose residual transport was towards the lagoon. The results pointed local hydrodynamics as an essential tool for understanding material transport and exchanges among the estuarine segments. A longer time series should be studied in order to obtain more robust conclusions.

RESUMO Este trabalho apresenta a descrição sazonal da hidrografia e hidrodinâmica de uma plataforma continental localizada na borda oeste do Atlântico tropical, a área de estudo encontra-se entre as latitudes de 7,5 e 9 °S, possui apenas 35 km de largura e 187 km de extensão, com a quebra de plataforma em 60m de profundidade. A salinidade e temperatura foram coletadas em campanhas hidrográficas mensalmente entre março de 2012 e maio 2013 por meio de transectos na região central da área de estudo. Também, duas campanhas foram realizadas, uma para caracterizar o inverno (Agosto de 2013) e outra o verão (janeiro de 2014) cobrindo toda a área de estudo (4600 km2). O nível da água e correntes também foram coletados com um Perfilado Acústico por efeito Doppler (ADCP) fundeado na região central da área de estudo. A variação sazonal de temperatura variou entre 26 °C em setembro e 29,5°C em abril, com um atraso de dois meses entre a temperatura mínima e máxima do ar atmosférico. A salinidade não apresentou variabilidade sazonal, estando entre 36,5 e 37,0 psu. A média de temperatura e salinidade das campanhas no inverno e no verão foram de 26,5 e 27,6°C e 37,1 e 36,7 psu, respectivamente. A Água tropical (AT) foi dominante, contabilizando 95% a 97%, com a presença de Águas Costeiras (AC) limitadas na região próximo da costa. A médias de velocidade de corrente na coluna d’água no inverno e no verão foi de 0,11 e 0.06m/s, refletindo o regime sazonal dos ventos. As correntes no inverno foram predominantes na direção norte, com um pequeno período de inversão para direção sul. Estes episódios ocorreram quando houve o relaxamento do vento e com a periodicidade entre 6-13 dias, retratado com a análise de ondeletas. Esta periodicidade pode estar associada com a instabilidade atmosférica em latitudes mais elevadas. As correntes no verão foram fracas, quando as marés contabilizaram 75% e 43% da variância nas correntes transversais e longitudinal respectivamente. A AT é a massa de água predominante na plataforma continental pernambucana no verão e no inverno, a intensidade das correntes no verão é fraca e sem direção definida e no inverno são mais fortes com o sentido norte.

ABSTRACT The present study presents the seasonal hydrography and currents of the Brazilian Northeast Continental Shelf. The study area is located on the Brazilian tropical coast of the Atlantic Ocean between 7.5 and 9 °S. This continental shelf is narrow (~35 km wide) and shallow, with shelf break lying at a depth of 60 m. Salinity and temperature data were collected monthly by means of hydrographic surveys, conducted across the shelf in a single transect in the central part of the study area, between March 2012 and May 2013. Two further campaigns were also conducted to characterize the winter (August 2013) and the summer (January 2014), covering the whole study area (4,600 km2). Water level and currents were measured using an array of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) moored at mid-shelf in the central area. Seasonal temperature ranged from 26 °C in September to 29.5 °C in April, with a 2-month lag between the minimum and maximum air temperatures. Salinity did not present a clear seasonal pattern, fluctuating between 36.5 and 37.0 psu throughout the year. The mean temperature and salinity values obtained in the winter and summer campaigns were 26.5 and 27.6 °C and 37.1 and 36.7 psu, respectively. Tropical Water (TW) was predominant, accounting for 95% to 97%, with presence of Coastal Water (CW) limited to the inner part of the shelf. The mean flow velocity values in the water column in winter and summer were 0.11 and 0.06 m/s, respectively, similarly to the seasonal wind regime. Northward currents were observed predominantly in winter, with a short period of inverted southward current. These episodes were related to periods of wind relaxation and presented periodicity of 6-13 days, observed through wavelet analysis. This periodicity may be associated with atmospheric instabilities at higher latitudes. Summer currents were sluggish, when the tides accounted for 75 and 43% of the variance in the cross- and along-shelf current components, respectively. TW is the main water mass in the Pernambuco Continental Shelf (PCS) in summer and winter. Current intensity is weak and without direction in summer and stronger towards the north in winter.

Resumo O estuário do Rio Capibaribe é um corpo de água que atravessa a Região Metropolitana de Recife (RMR), um dos maiores centros populacionais do Brasil, o que causa grande quantidade de carga de poluentes e baixa qualidade da água. A entrada de água doce a partir das águas residuais da RMR pode contabilizar mais de três vezes a contribuição fluvial durante o período de baixa descarga. Este artigo investiga a hidrodinâmica e o potencial transporte de escalares particulados e dissolvidos neste estuário. Um experimento de campo foi realizado para registrar nível da água, velocidade de corrente, salinidade, temperatura e material particulado em suspensão (MPS) durante um ciclo de maré semidiurno completo. O experimento foi realizado em condições de baixa descarga e em condições de maré de sizígia. O estuário apresentou padrão de circulação parcialmente estratificado. O transporte residual de água e sal foi estuário acima, enquanto que o transporte residual de MPS foi estuário abaixo. Os primeiros são entendidos como o efeito da complexa circulação ao redor das ilhas que formam o baixo estuário, enquanto que o último foi interpretado como devido a efeitos morfológicos que induzem à ressuspensão durante a vazante, a despeito da simetria entre correntes de enchente e vazante. Este mecanismo pode produzir transporte para a plataforma adjacente, mesmo durante períodos dominados pela maré, quando o oposto seria esperado.

Abstract The Capibaribe Estuary is a water body that crosses the Recife Metropolitan Area (RMA), one of the largest population centers in Brazil, and causes large pollutant loads and poor water quality. The fresh water inflow of wastewater from the RMA can account for three times the volume of the river discharge during the low discharge period. This article assesses the hydrodynamics and potential transport of particulate and dissolved scalars in this estuary. A field experiment was conducted to record the water level, current velocity, salinity, temperature and suspended particulate matter (SPM) contents during a full semi-diurnal tidal cycle. This experiment was performed during low river discharge and spring tide conditions. The estuary showed a partially mixed circulation pattern. The residual transport of water and salt were up estuary, while the SPM residual transport was down estuary. The former were understood as the effect of the residual circulation around the islands, while the latter was interpreted as a morphological factor inducing greater resuspension during the ebb, despite the symmetrical ebb and flood currents. This mechanism may transport SPM to the inner shelf, even under tide-dominated conditions when the opposite would be expected.

Em Portugal, o reconhecimento da importância estratégica da zona costeira, criou a necessidade de proceder à sua proteção e O presente estudo avalia as condições ambientais do complexo estuarino dos rios Capibaribe, Beberibe e Bacia do Pina, a partir de conhecimentos sobre a matéria orgânica sedimentar, associados a análises sedimentológicas tradicionais. Para isso, foram realizadas análises granulométricas e dos conteúdos de matéria orgânica total e carbonato biodetrítico de 50 amostras coletadas (nov-dez/2012), correlacionando-os aos condicionantes locais. Análises elementares e isotópicas da matéria orgânica contida nos sedimentos superficiais também foram feitas. Com base nos resultados obtidos, foram efetuadas análises de correlação, agrupamento e componentes principais. Os resultados revelaram predomínio de sedimentos siltosos, pobremente selecionados e com altos teores orgânicos (1,2 to 15,2%), por se tratar de um ambiente altamente eutrofizado. Os teores de carbonatos não obedecem a uma relação direta apenas com uma fração granulométrica específica, mas também com uma fonte disponível, e foram classificados como litoclásticos em sua maior parte. Independentemente das diferenças que possam existir na interpretação dos parâmetros indicadores da matéria orgânica sedimentar (-26,20 a -21,62‰PDB e -0,96 a 6,0 ‰Ar razões isotópicas do C e N, respectivamente), os dados atuais e a comparação com trabalhos anteriores permitem concluir que o sistema é um ambiente deposicional de baixa energia submetido à forte influência de fontes terrígenas, em especial antrópicas, com influência marinha na sedimentação em porções específicas do sistema. A área comporta-se como um retentor natural de sedimentos e caracteriza-se como um ambiente estuarino confinado, assoreado, densamente urbanizado e com aporte perene de sedimentos sílticos finos, de composição siliciclástica e argilas, com teores orgânicos altos. Essa conjunção de fatores produz um ambiente de sedimentação costeira de grande vulnerabilidade ambiental, indicado pela classificação como hipertrófico, o que se deve ao fato de todo sistema estuarino captar principalmente efluentes de esgoto doméstico e industrial sem tratamento, dentre outras fontes de poluição.

The present study evaluates the environmental conditions of the Capibaribe and Beberibe estuarine systems and Pina Basin, by mean of sedimentary organic matter characteristics associated with traditional sedimentary analysis. The employed parameters were the grain size, carbonate contents and the elemental and isotopic sedimentary organic matter analysis (C, N,δ¹³C, δ15N), correlating this proxies to local environmental conditions in 50 surface sediment samples. Correlation analysis,cluster and principal components were made based on the results. The analysis revealed a predominance of the silty sediments, poorly selected and with high organic contents (1.2 to 15.2%) because it is a highly eutrophic environment. The carbonate contents do not present a direct relationship only with a specific grain size fraction (sand), but also with an available marine source. The stable isotopic ratios ranged from -26.20 to -21.62 ‰PDB (δ¹³C) and -0.96 to 6.05 ‰Ar (δ15 N). The current data and the comparison with previous work indicate a low-energy depositional environment, submitted to the strong influence of terrigenous sources, anthropogenic, in particular with marine influence on sedimentation in specific portions of the system. The area acts as a natural trap of sediments and is characterized as a confined estuarine environment, subjected to a strong silting process, densely urbanized with perennial supply of fine silty siliciclastic and clayey sediments, with high organic contents. This combination of factors produces an environment of coastal sedimentation with high environmental vulnerability, indicated by the classification as hypertrophic. This is a direct result of the anthropic multiple uses of the estuarine system, mainly associated to domestic and industrial sewage in natura discharges to the area, among other sources of pollution.

O rio Jaguaribe é o maior rio do semi-árido brasileiro, constituindo uma importante fonte de água para o estado do Ceará. Na década de 1990 entrou em operação o Açude do Castanhão com o objetivo de regularizar a vazão do rio Jaguaribe, o qual obteve grande sucesso. Como consequência foi alterado o regime hidrodinâmico do estuário, o qual atualmente não está mais sujeito a variabilidade climatológica anual de estações seca e chuvosa. O presente trabalho apresenta uma avaliação da mudança do regime hidrológico antes e após a construção do açude, e investiga a estrutura de estratificação da densidade nos estuários. Foi realizado um experimento de campo em novembro de 2009, no fim da estação seca, quando a salinidade e temperatura da água foram monitorados em diferentes níveis durante três ciclos de maré. A variação temporal da salinidade e temperatura durante os ciclos de maré foram de 16 psu e 1,5ºC, respectivamente. A salinidade chegou a apresentar variação vertical de 4 unidades, enquanto que a variação da temperatura foi bem inferior. Foram calculados parâmetros indicadores da estratificação a partir da densidade: coeficiente de estratificação; frequência de Brunt-Väisälä; e a anomalia da energia potencial. Os resultados mostraram que os parâmetros comportam-se da mesma maneira, apenas com diferença da magnitude relativa de seus valores. A estrutura vertical do estuário apresentou estratificação pronunciada durante a fase de vazante da maré, e verticalmente homogênea na fase de enchente da maré e durante a preamar. Dada as condições presentes, com vazão regularizada, o estuário apresenta padrão de estratificação parcialmente misturado e hiposalino, quando seria esperado uma condição bem misturada e hipersalina para o período estudado.

The Jaguaribe River is the largest semi-arid Brazilian river and represents an important water source for the state of Ceará. The Castanhão Weir, built to regulate the flow of the Jaguaribe, began operating successfully in the 1990s. As a result, the hydrodynamic regime of the estuary has undergone alteration and is no longer subject to the former annual climatological variability of the dry and rainy seasons. This paper introduces an assessment of the changes in the hydrological conditions resulting from the construction of the weir and investigates the structure of the density stratification in the estuary. A field experiment was conducted at the end of the dry season in November 2009, during which salinity and temperature were monitored at different levels for three tidal cycles. The temporal variations in salinity and temperature during the tidal cycles were 16 psu and 1.5°C, respectively. The salinity exhibited a vertical variation of four units, while the temperature variation was much lower. Several stratification indicators were calculated from the observed density: the stratification coefficient, the Brunt-Väisälä frequency and the potential energy anomaly. The results showed that the parameters behave similarly, differences being observed only in their relative magnitudes. The vertical structure of the estuary exhibited marked stratification during the ebb tide but vertical homogeneity during both flood and high tide. With the regularized flow existing under present conditions, the estuary exhibits hyposaline and a partially mixed structure for the period studied, despite the typical expectation of a hypersaline and well-mixed vertical structure.

A hidrodinâmica, morfologia e sedimentologia do estuário do Taperaçu foram investigadas. Este é um entre vários estuários do litoral amazônico que integram a maior extensão contínua de manguezais do mundo, apresentando uma descarga de água doce muito reduzida, atípica para a região. Os resultados revelam grandes bancos arenosos que ocupam em grande parte a porção central do estuário. Areias muito finas e bem selecionadas de origem marinha prevalecem. Fases de enchente mais curtas, com velocidades de corrente substancialmente mais altas, são observadas na porção superior do estuário, como esperado para um estuário raso e dominado por fricção. Por outro lado, uma vazante mais intensa poderia ocorrer como resultado de grandes áreas de manguezais associadas e intenso preenchimento estuarino, sendo que ambas as condições são observadas no Taperaçu. Neste caso, a prevalência da enchente parece estar associada à ausência de uma descarga fluvial efetiva. Além disso, alguns canais de maré conectam o Taperaçu com seu vizinho estuário do Caeté, o que contribuiria para o domínio de enchente. Como um todo, os resultados demonstram uma complexa interação de aspectos de configuração (fricção, drenagem fluvial, conexões com estuários vizinhos, preenchimento e grandes áreas intermareais) na determinação dos padrões hidrodinâmicos, contribuindo para o entendimento dos estuários da região amazônica.

The hydrodynamics, morphology and sedimentology of the Taperaçu estuary were investigated. This is one of several estuaries located within the largest mangrove fringe in the world, bordering the Amazon region, subject to a macrotidal regime and regionally atypical negligible fresh water supply. The results reveal widespread sand banks that occupy the central portion of the estuarine cross-section. Well-sorted very fine sandy sediments of marine origin prevail. Shorter flood phases, with substantially higher current velocities, were observed in the upper sector of Taperaçu, as expected for a shallow, friction-dominated estuary. However, ebb domination can be expected for estuaries with large associated mangrove areas and substantial estuarine infilling, both of which situations occur on the Taperaçu. The tidal asymmetry favoring flood currents could be the result of the absence of an effective fluvial discharge. Furthermore, it was observed that the Taperaçu is connected by tidal creeks to the neighboring Caeté estuary, allowing a stronger flux during the flood and intensifying the higher flood currents. As a whole, the results have shown a complex interaction of morphological aspects (friction, fluvial drainage, connections with neighbor estuaries, infilling and large storage area) in determining hydrodynamic patterns, thus improving the understanding of Amazon estuaries.

O Rio Mampituba drena uma área de 1.200 km², nasce na Serra Geral e desemboca no Oceano Atlântico junto à cidade de Torres, após percorrer cerca de 62 quilômetros. Apresenta vazão média de 18,6 m³.s-1, profundidade média de 4 m e está sob regime de micromarés. Em 17 de maio de 2008 foi realizada uma campanha durante dois ciclos de maré (25 horas), quando foram registrados dados de correntes, salinidade e concentração de sedimentos em suspensão. Durante a campanha o nível de água no estuário do Rio Mampituba mostrou tendência de diminuição e a altura da maré foi de 0,4 m, apresentando assimetria com predominância de enchente. O padrão de correntes no estuário foi bidirecional, com velocidade média de vazante de 0,33 e enchente de 0,13 m.s-1. A estratificação no estuário acompanhou a subida da maré, com um avanço da cunha salina até aproximadamente 5 km estuário adentro. O transporte de sal total no estuário foi de 1,11 kg.m-1.s-1 no sentido estuário afora. A componente da descarga fluvial foi responsável por 98% do transporte de sal para fora do estuário, enquanto o transporte estuário adentro teve participação de 51% da circulação gravitacional, 26% da correlação da maré e 19% do bombeamento da maré. O transporte de sedimentos em suspensão foi devido principalmente à circulação gravitacional, representando 83% do transporte total. A hidrodinâmica do estuário do Rio Mampituba responde como umestuário altamente estratificado dominado pelo rio.

The Mampituba River drains a watershed with 1,200 km² in area, having its springs in the Serra Geral and debouching to the Atlantic Ocean at city of Torres, after running a 62 km long course. It has a mean discharge of 18.6 m³.s-1, a mean depth around 4 m and is under a microtidal regime. An oceanographic campaign was carried out at May 17th, 2008, when water level, currents, salinity and suspended sediment concentration were recorded during two tidal cycles(25 hours). The water level presented a decreasing trend during the campaign, and the mean tidal range was 0.4 m, with flood dominated asymmetry. The current pattern was bi-directional with mean ebb and flood velocity of 0.33 and 0.13 m.s-1, respectively. The estuarine stratification followed the tide, with the salt wedge intrusion extending 5 km up-estuary. The total salt transport was 1.11 kg.m-1.s-1 out to the estuary. The fluvial discharge component accounted for 98% of the seaward transport, whereas the landward transport had 51% due to the gravitational circulation, 26% due to tidal correlation and 19% due to tidal pumping. The suspended sediments transport was mainly due to the gravitational circulation, which accounted for 83% of the total transport. The Mampituba River estuary hydrodynamics responds mainly to the river, presenting a highly stratified behavior.

Uma caracterização hidrodinâmica do sistema estuarino do rio Itapocu e Lagoa de Barra Velha foi realizada com objetivo de avaliar como o regime de correntes é afetado pela maré astronômica e meteorológica, e pela descarga fluvial. Dados meteorológicos, nível da água e correntes foram registrados em intervalos horários durante um período de vinte dias, entre 22 de julho até 10 de agosto de 2004. Os correntógrafos foram posicionados na desembocadura, nas conexões do estuário com as lagoas norte e sul, e no baixo estuário, juntamente com um marégrafo. O sistema estuarino apresentou comportamento de correntes diferenciado entre as diversas localizações, em resposta às diferentes forçantes. As correntes mais intensas foram registradas na desembocadura, e as mais fracas na lagoa norte, local que apresentou uma hidrodinâmica muito reduzida. O escoamento apresentou fluxo residual de vazante, em resposta à descarga fluvial, mesmo durante eventos de subida do nível do mar causados pelo vento.

A hydrodynamic characterization of the Itapocu river and Barra Velha lagoon estuarine system was carried out with the objective of evaluating how the current regime in this area is affected by astronomical and meteorological tides and the river discharge. Meteorological, water level and current velocity and direction data were gathered hourly during a twenty-day period, from 22-July until 10-August, 2004. Current meters were positioned at the inlet, at the entrance of the north and south lagoons and at the lower estuary of the river along with a tide gauge. The estuarine system showed distinct current behavior among the different sectors within the estuary, responding to the different forcings. The strongest currents were observed at the inlet while the weakest values were observed at the northern lagoon, a location that showed little dynamic. The general flow was ebb-dominated flux, in response to fluvial discharge, even during local wind water set-up event.

Uma campanha oceanográfica foi realizada no estuário do rio Araranguá durante o período de 11 e 13 de maio de 2006, objetivando fazer uma primeira caracterização hidrográfica do sistema. A campanha foi realizada em condição de maré de sizígia, e coincidentemente após um evento de chuvas intensas na região que produziu um pico de descarga fluvial. Séries temporais de nível da água, correntes e salinidade foram registradas durante 50 horas, em um local aproximadamente 7 km da desembocadura. Dois levantamentos longitudinais de salinidade também foram realizados. Os dados hidrográficos foram utilizados para calcular o fluxo advectivo de sal visando investigar os termos do transporte em função da mudança da descarga fluvial. Os resultados mostram que a estrutura estuarina foi fortemente modulada pela vazão fluvial. O nível da água baixou em torno de 0,5 m durante as primeiras 25 horas em relação direta com o decaimento da enchente do rio. Embora a coluna de água fosse altamente estratificada durante todo o período, e a estratificação aumentou durante as últimas 25 horas. As correntes foram mais intensas, de vazante e uni-direcionais no início, tornando mais fracas bidirecionais à medida que o nível da água baixou, adquirindo um padrão de maré. O transporte total de sal nas primeiras 25 horas foi de -13,6 Kg.m-1.s-1 (sentido do mar), mudando para 3 Kg.m-1.s-1 nas últimas 25 horas (sentido de terra). Foi também notável que o pH no estuário, registrado junto com a salinidade, em torno de 5, indicando que a qualidade da água ficou afetada pela atividade de mineração de carvão que ocorre na bacia hidrográfica.

An oceanographic campaign was conducted in the Araranguá river estuary during the period from May 11th to 13th of 2006 in order to produce a first hydrographic characterization of this system. The campaign was carried out during the spring tide period, and coincidentally after an intense rain event in the region which produced a peak in river discharge. Water level, currents and salinity time series were recorded hourly during a 50-hour period, at a site nearly 7 km upstream from the estuarine mouth. Two longitudinal distributions of salinity along the estuary were also recorded. The hydrographic data time-series were used to compute the advective salt flux in order to investigate the changes in the transport terms as a function of the change in discharge. The results showed that the estuarine structure was strongly modulated by the river discharge. The drop in water level of about 0.5 m during the first 24 hours was directly related to the ebb phase of the river flood. The water column was highly stratified throughout the period, therefore the stratification increased during the last 24 hours. The currents were stronger, ebbing and uni-directional at the beginning and became weaker and bidirectional as the water level went down, assuming a tidal pattern. The total salt transport in the first 25 hours was of -13.6 kg.m-1.s-1 (seawards), decreasing to 3 Kg.m-1.s-1 during the last 25 hours (landwards). It was also noticeable that the pH in the estuary, recorded together with the salinity, was around 5, showing that the water quality in the estuary is affected by the coal mining activity in the hydrographic basin.

A circulação e o transporte de material particulado em suspensão no Estuário de Caravelas são pesquisados. Dados quase-sinóticos hidrográficos, de correntes (velocidade e transporte de volume com ADCP) e de material particulado em suspensão, foram medidos em intervalos horários durante um ciclo semidiurno de maré de sizígia, em duas seções transversais na Boca do Tomba e na Barra Velha e também em seções longitudinais na baixa-mar e na preamar. Na primeira transversal as correntes máximas de vazante (-1,50 m s-1) foram quase duas vezes mais intensas do que na seção transversal mais larga e rasa Barra Velha, (-0,80 m s-1) e as maiores velocidades das correntes de enchente foram de 0,75 m s-1 e 0,60 m s-1, respectivamente. Devido à grande intensidade das correntes de maré, nas duas seções transversais a salinidade apresentou-se fracamente estratificada, sendo classificadas com o Diagrama Estratificação-circulação do Tipo 2a (parcialmente misturada e fraca estratificação vertical) e do Tipo 1a (bem misturada). Os transportes de volume foram muito próximos, variando de -3.500 m³ s-1 a 3.100 m³ s-1, na vazante e na enchente, respectivamente, com um transporte de volume residual igual a -630 m³ s-1. A concentração do material particulado em suspensão (MPS) esteve fortemente relacionado à variação da maré, decrescendo estuário acima de 50 mg.L-1, na boca do estuário, para 10 mg.L-1 para distâncias de 9 km e 16 km nos experimentos na baixa-mar e preamar, respectivamente. O transporte residual de MPS foi estuário abaixo com uma taxa estimada em -18 ton por ciclo de maré.

The circulation and transport of suspended particulate matter in the Caravelas Estuary are assessed. Nearly-synoptic hourly hydrographic, current (ADCP velocity and volume transport) and suspended particulate matter data were collected during a full semidiurnal spring tide, on the two transects Boca do Tomba and Barra Velha and on longitudinal sections at low and high tide. On the first transect the peak ebb currents (-1.5 ms-1) were almost twice as strong as those of the wider and shallow Barra Velha inlet (-0.80 ms-1) and the peak flood currents were 0.75 and 0.60 ms-1, respectively. Due to the strong tidal currents both inlets had weak vertical salinity stratification and were classified with the Stratification-circulation Diagram as Type 2a (partially mixed-weakly stratified) and Type 1a (well mixed). Volume transports were very close, ranging from -3,500 to 3,100 m³s-1 at the ebb and flood, respectively, with a residual -630 m³s-1. The concentration of the suspended particulate matter was closely related to the tidal variation and decreased landwards from 50 mg.L-1 at the estuary mouth, to 10 mg.L-1 at distances of 9 and 16 km for the low and high tide experiments, respectively. The total residual SPM transport was out of the estuary at rates of -18 tons per tidal cycle.

A variabilidade do nível da água no baixo estuário do rio Paraíba do Sul foi estudada para avaliar os efeitos da co-oscilação da maré astronômica, descarga fluvial e de eventos meteorológicos. Dados de nível da água foram registrados em intervalos horários para o período entre outubro de 2000 até fevereiro de 2003 em uma estação localizada próximo à desembocadura do estuário. Foi observado que durante os eventos de descarga fluvial baixa os níveis de água do estuário oscilam principalmente em função da co-oscilação da maré astronômica e eventualmente por marés meteorológicas. Durante períodos de descarga fluvial alta o nível da água de preamar no baixo estuário é dominado pela co-oscilação, enquanto que nas baixa-mares é influenciado pela descarga fluvial. Em períodos de descarga fluvial muito alta o estuário passa a receber a influência tanto da descarga fluvial quanto da maré astronômica nas oscilações do nível. Em períodos de baixa descarga quase não houve modificação na onda de maré, sendo observada pequena assimetria no sentido de vazante. Ainda em baixa descarga, eventos de maré meteorológica produzem distorções e assimetrias, com o tempo de subida menor que o de descida, gerando correntes mais fortes no sentido de enchente. Contudo, isto não pôde ser confirmado com a relação de fase entre M2 e M4, que sugeriu domínio de vazante. A descarga fluvial alta causou fortes distorções na onda de maré em períodos de quadratura e uma atenuação considerável nas amplitudes tanto de sizígia como de quadratura, com assimetrias no sentido de vazante corroboradas pela relação de fase entre M2 e M4.

The water level in the lower Paraíba do Sul river estuary was assessed in order to evaluate the effects of the astronomical tide co-oscillation, river discharge and meteorological events. Water level data was recorded hourly from October 2000 until February 2003 at a gauge station nearby the estuarine inlet. The water level is controlled mainly by the astronomical tide co-oscillation during periods of low river discharge, and eventually by meteorological tides. Even during periods of higher river discharge the water level is controlled by astronomical co-oscillation, although during low tide phase the river discharge effects are observable. During periods of extreme high discharge the low frequency water level is mainly driven by the river inflow. The tidal wave was mostly symmetrical during the low river discharge periods, and asymmetries were observed during meteorological events, with shorter flood and longer ebbs. Although, such effects were not corroborated by astronomical tidal constituents M2 and M4 relationship, which suggests ebb dominance. Stronger distortions were observed during high discharge periods, with tide attenuationeither at neap as in spring tide periods. During these periods the asymmetries were corroborated by M2 and M4 relationship.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo identificar e caracterizar as feições oceanográficas de pequena e mesoescala que ocorrem na plataforma continental de Santa Catarina (SC). Foram empregadas imagens de temperatura e concentração de clorofila da superfície do mar (TSM e CSM), obtidas pelo sensor MODIS. Foi selecionada uma imagem diária para cada mês do ano de 2003, excetuando dezembro, onde procurou-se avaliar efeitos sazonais. As feições oceanográficas foram observadas através da aplicação de diferentes níveis de contraste e paletas de cores para realce. Foram identificadas feições como vórtices, meandros, cogumelos, plumas, filamentos, frentes e áreas de ressurgências. Os resultados indicam que no verão a distribuição superficial em mesoescala da temperatura é mais homogênea, levando a um número menor de feições observáveis. O fenômeno de ressurgência costeira em escala localizada ao sul da Ilha de SC e junto à costa foi observado nos meses de novembro, janeiro e fevereiro. Durante o outono e o inverno as imagens apresentaram maior grau de complexidade, principalmente devido à presença da frente costeira do Prata, com características de menor temperatura e maiores valores de clorofila.

The objective of this paper is to characterize surface small and meso-scale oceanographic features in the Santa Catarina continental shelf, Brazil. The features were identified using MODIS satellite imagery of sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface chlorophyll (SSC). One daily image was selected for each month of the year 2003, excepting December, aiming to search for seasonality. The oceanographic features were identified by visual inspection, applying different levels of contrast and color palettes to improve the visualization. The features identified were distinguished in eddies, meanders, mushroom like features, plumes, filaments, fronts and upwelling areas. The results indicated that during the summer, the continental shelf is homogeneous with few surface features. The most prominent feature during summer period (January to March) was the upwelling area nearby Santa Marta Cape, southern from Florianópolis Island. During the fall and winter seasons there were more surface features, mainly due to the evolution of the Prata Front system, with smaller SST and higher SSC.
